Flat-bodied (Heptageniidae)

There are a several species of British Heptageniidae but the most widespread and commonest is the Yellow May Dun. Although it is reputed to be relatively rare in the south-east of England it occurs in large numbers on our stretch of the Tillingbourne.

They are slightly spider like in appearance and have a very pronounced flattened body and broad head. Normally they can be found clinging to stones and other debris. Unlike shrimps and olives they swim rather slowly.
